Weight Loss Success Story: Dawn Calhoun

Today I want you to meet a lovely woman named Dawn.  She went into the doctor’s office weighing over 420 pounds.  She went in to sign up to have gastric bypass surgery.  One thing led to another and with the help of Weight Watchers, she has lost almost 200 pounds in a year and a half!

She is going to inspire you to CUT-OUT-THE-JUNK!  I just love her story of hope and inspiration and I know you will too!

Tell us a little about yourself, your family, your job, etc…
I am Dawn 53 years from Houston , Texas.  I am single mother of a 13 year old son. I work at an elementary school in what we call DMC. I am also a caregiver for a special needs child.  I love both my jobs and I feel like I am helping kids be a better person and make better choices.  I feel like I am being a good role model to kids and adults showing them that it is never too late to turn your life around and be healthier about what you eat and how you take care of yourself.

How long did it take you to get to your ideal weight? Are you there now?
Weight Loss Success Story Dawn before losing weight.I started Weight Watchers on September 5,2012.  My starting weight was 420.2 pounds and I am now at 224.0 pounds I have lost a total of 196 pounds in 17 months. I still have another 78 pounds to lose before I make goal. I hope to make goal by my two year anniversary but if I do not, it’s OK!  I will get there when I am supposed to in time. I also want work for Weight Watchers when I get to goal.  I want to reach out to help other morbidly obesity people.

What was your motivation to lose weight?
Went to the doctor because I wanted to have weight lose surgery.  My insurance put a road block there that I could not get past. I found out I had high cholesterol and she was going to put me on medicine but I told her I would do something about my weight instead. I was so heavy, the nurse could not weigh me on a scale.  My doctor was a big motivator for me.  I love her!  She talks to me like one Christian to another and not like a doctor to a patient. On that day, she made big difference in my life and I have never looked back.

What made you decide to start your weight loss journey?
My doctor told me to lose 50 pounds in three months.  Instead, I lost 60 pounds.  Then, she gave me another three months to lose another 50 but, I lost 130!!  I just kept going and here we are a year and 5 months later and I am still not on medicine and I am 196 pounds lighter!  I have discovered along the way at Weight Watchers that you do not hear a lot about people who have over 200 plus pounds lose!  That is why I want to work for them so other members can see someone who had a lot of weight to lose. I just want to show people there is another way beside surgery.

What kept you on track losing weight?
I track every thing I eat  and I plan ahead. I don’t drink any soda, don’t eat any junk food, eat very little fast food and no processed foods at all.  I eat very clean.  I do not let anyone control me or my food ever again. That was what was keeping me fat- all the junk that was in my life!  When I cut the junk out, the weight fell off.

Tell us about a typical day in terms of eating and exercise.
I cook for a whole week on Sunday!  I never leave the house without breakfast and lunch that I bring from home!  Everyday, I wear a pedometer at all times so I know how much I am walking!  I am also lucky to have a job this year where I get to walk a lot.  I walk around 5-7 miles a day.

What is the biggest difference you have noticed because of your weight loss?
In the beginning, I could not walk 2 feet.  Now, I can walk and sing and dance!  I love to walk now!  At first, I hated it and could not wait to sit down looking for the closest chair in the room.  I used to hate to stand up because my knees hurt so badly.  Now, no more knee pain!  I also park the car farther and walk now.

What advice can you give to others struggling to lose weight?
You did not gain the weight overnight and it is not going to come off overnight.  It takes time and effort.  If you remember these five things, you will have success with weight loss…Faith, Food, Fitness, Focus, and Friends. If you fall, get back up the next meal and start over.  It is never too late to turn around.

How do you keep the weight off in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle?
When I think about quitting, I look at my loose skin and I keep going.  The skin is a constant reminder of what I did to myself and I never want to go back to that 400 pound woman who was very unhappy and alone all the time. I love the new me!  I am full of energy and life now and my son likes this mother so much better!  He is very proud of her.

Give us a quote or a motto that you have used to keep you focused.
My doctor told me if god put it here, it is good for you and 95 percent of what man put here is bad for you.  I think about that whenever I eat.  Just remember if it grows on a plant, eat it!  If it is made in a plant, leave it on the shelf.

Just remember…weight loss is about loving yourself.  It does not matter how long the journey takes you.  You will arrive there when you are supposed to…whether it is two months or three years!  God is guiding you the whole time.  Just have faith and believe in yourself!

I LOVE THAT!!!!  “If it grows on a plant, eat it.  If it is made IN a plant, leave it!”  How cool is that?!?!?  Dawn, you are inspiration to us all!  Your determination is incredible!  Thank you for sharing your story with us.  You WILL get to your goal and you WILL become a leader to inspire others!  You are amazing!

What did you love about Dawn’s story?
