Would You Rather Be Skinny or Have a Big Heart?

Would you rather be skinny or be told you have a big heart? Don’t answer too quickly. Take time to really think about it.

I think if some of us are real with ourselves, our heart would answer, “Big Heart” but our head would answer, “Skinny.” We know what the answer “should” be, but what is the answer really?

For those of us in Georgia, it is the end of the school year. The kids come into school with gifts for their teachers, flowers from their yard, and big smiles on their face because they know that in a few short days, school will be out and it will be summer. I received this in my mailbox today:

Tagxedo creation about Mrs. Swafford

Words to describe Mrs. Swafford

It was in a cute little envelope and had my name on the front. It said it was from Claudia. I took lots of time to read the adjectives she had written about me and here is how the conversation in my head went:

“Oh Claudia…I am so proud of you for using Tagxedo that I taught you last week to make me something!”

“Let’s see, I am funny, kind, awesome, sweet, nice, and I have a big heart. Wow! She thinks I have a big heart…that is so cool! Skiny (aka skinny)…SKINY!?! She thinks I am skinny?!? I am sure she is just saying that because I told them last week that their moms would love to see that they are skinny on their mother’s day presents. Well, maybe she does really think I am skinny! That is so cool that she would even say I am skinny!”

Ok…what was my focus? Was it that I had a big heart? Nope. Was it that I am kind? Nope. My focus was solely on another person thinking I am skinny. It really is sad.

I stopped myself in my tracks and needed a reality check. A small voice said to me, “God will not care if you were skinny when you get to heaven. All He will care about is how big your heart was, how kind you were, how much you showed love to Him and others. He doesn’t care if you are skinny or not!”

Wake-Up-Call.

Sometimes in our journey to be more healthy, we get caught up in all of it and lose focus on what is really important. Four years ago when I was obese, my children in my class didn’t care if I was skinny or not. To some of them, I will forever be their “favorite teacher.”  Just like those children, God only cares about our heart and our relationship with Him. Let’s not lose focus of what REALLY matters.

How do you answer the question, truly?  Let’s get our head back in the game and remember that although we want to be healthy (aka skinny), what matters most are the matters of the heart!

Excellent post. I’m in the beginning stages of my journey – I’ve been on it, like you, almost all of my life. But, at 44, I have got to get serious about it….well, or die. I do enjoy reading your blog and have read it for awhile now – but this one entry in particular, really struck a chord with me. Keep up the great work (the journey and the writing about it). I’m quite sure that *many more people than you can even imagine are touched by it.

Well, difficult question. I am a mom, foster mom, grandmother … even though I have only 46 (ok almost 47) years. I love all my children, husband, friends. But I don’t like my own image in the mirror … I don’t like drugs for high blood pressure that I have to drink, too. So, I choose to be thinner and healthier …http://diets-and-fat-burners.com/

Why should it be a question of one or the other?  Why can’t we be kind and loving people who make our health a priority?  You student(s) are learning so much about how to set their priorities by watching you look ill health in the face and say “no.” Feeling a rush of joy when you are validated for all your efforts is a good thing.  Feeling good at a job well done may be God’s way of helping us stay the course and know we are right where we ought to be.  Would you rather be a kind, loving, shining reflection of God’s love at a healthy weight or an unhealthy one?  I am much better able to do God’s work and follow his plan for me at a healthy weight and I know from reading your blog that you are too.  Keep it up and enjoy the recognition.

Totally agree! Great point made…let’s shoot for both!

I got a Tagxedo (although I didn’t know the program at all) from Claudia too!  Mine was in the shape of a crown with all kinds of great words, also.  Yes, I got the SKINY (lost so much, I lost an “N”…hehe) and I thought “wouldn’t it be great if I could believe that?”  Yes, I would rather have a big heart and do what’s right for our kids, but doing it while skinny would be nice!!! Keep it up, girl….you are awesome!!

LOVE IT! I was so excited that she used something I taught her to make us all gifts! I agree that it is better to be healthy while living life but a big heart is the way to go!

How about being skinny AND having a big heart? Anyway being skinny is overrated. It’s how you feel inside that counts!

100% Agreed! Healthy is what it is all about!

I have been obeys in my entire life and that is why I became diabetic as well. I’m so sick of it. I want to enjoy my life to the fullest. I keep on searching for a possible solution that could help me lose weight and I got an information from one site that talks about a formula that could help loosing weight without undergoing gastric by-pass surgery. The link is – howtofightobesityrocalabsreview.blogspot.com. Have you guys heard anything about it? Is it true? or another scam in progress?

Both! I want to be skinny with a big heart! I was considering a gastric bypass surgery but afraid for complications I could get after so I decided to start a program with gastric bypass no surgery I found on many blogs and reviews. The name is rocalabs. I’m crossing my fingers for this to work and help me lose weight real fast. :)

Hi Gwen:  So glad you decided against gastric bypass surgery.  That was such a smart move.  I know two different people that had it done and had tons of issues.  There are so many “safe” ways to lose weight and keep it off.  I wish you lots of luck!

Good for you for following your instincts and doing what you think is right. That is one step in the right direction. I hope the program works for you. Keep us posted. I would love to hear how it goes!
