Tell us a little about yourself, your family, your job, etc…

My name is Kim Lawson. I am 45 years old. I live in the very small town of Fillmore, New York. I have been married to my very best friend, Bill, for 25 years. My husband is a pastor at Fillmore Wesleyan Church. We have two daughters. Cassie is 20 years old and attends Indiana Wesleyan University. Bailey is 14 and is in the eighth grade. I have rheumatoid arthritis and had a total knee replacement surgery during my weight loss process on December 15, 2011. I am the Student Payroll Clerk at Houghton College.

How long did it take you to get to your ideal weight? Are you there now?

It took me a year to lose sixty pounds. I began my weight loss journey in February 2011. I have kept the weight off for a year now and have decided to jump back in and try to lose 15 more pounds.

What was your motivation to lose weight?

I was motivated to lose weight because I knew it be so good for my joints. Carrying around so much weight was making my knees and hips hurt so much more.

What made you decide to start your weight loss journey?

I had a relative who had lap band surgery and lost a lot of weight. This really made me want to lose weight but I wanted to do it in a way that didn’t involve such drastic measures. I wanted to do it the old fashioned way and in a way that resulted in a lifestyle change that would last.

What kept you on track losing weight?

I lost weight by following Weight Watchers Online. Tracking my food is what helped me. Keeping myself aware of what and how much I was eating made all the difference.

Tell us about a typical day in terms of eating and exercise.

I try to have at least one serving of fruit or vegetables with every meal. I struggle most with limiting my intake of carbs. I am a rice, bread and pasta lover! I try to stick to whole grains. Drinking a lot of water is important, but I struggle with this too. Lean meats and lowfat dairy products like string cheese and Greek Yogurt are essential. I have learned that the more colorful your meal is, the better!

I had to really watch what I ate during my weight loss journey because I was not able to do a lot of exercise. It was during a time when I was in extreme pain due to the damage that my rheumatoid arthritis had done to my knee. I even had trouble walking short distances without pain. After my surgery, I was forced to exercise for my physical therapy. I did a lot of bike riding and walking to get my knee to where it needed to be. I don’t exercise nearly as much as I should. I do try to walk and take advantage of the gym at the college where I work. I could do a LOT better at this though. I am much more disciplined when it comes to eating than I am exercising!

What is the biggest difference you have noticed because of your weight loss?

I feel so much better not only physically but emotionally. My body doesn’t hurt nearly as much! I have been able to go off one of my medications and still manage to feel good. With the combination of the surgery and the weight loss, I can now do things that I couldn’t do before. I walk the mall and I also go hiking at the state park!

I always hated shopping before. Now I really enjoy clothes! I am so excited to be able shop for clothes that aren’t plus size! I went from a size 20 to a 10! I actually like how I look and I think my husband does too! I am a ton more confident!

What advice can you give to others struggling to lose weight?

It is better for the weight to come off slowly. Just dieting won’t work. You have to change your lifestyle and how you think about food. Give yourself a break if you have a bad day and make some bad food choices. Celebrate the small victories every day! You are beautiful no matter what size you are. My precious husband told me that!

How do you keep the weight off in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle?

I have to continue to track my food. If I don’t I tend to eat too much. I need the accountability. I have made bad food choices for most of my adult life. I know I can’t fix that in a year.

Give us a quote or a motto that you have used to keep you focused.

Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels!!!

What other information would you like to share?

I do believe that my faith in God has also been a huge contributing factor to my success. I could not have done this on my own. God gives me the strength every day to slow down long enough to make wise choices. I also owe a ton to my husband and children. They have been so supportive. They have also made a lot of changes in their eating because of how I now shop and cook. They have been patient and encouraging. My husband is the best! He loves me so much and makes sure that I know it! He tells me every day that I am beautiful and he always has even when I was at my heaviest. I am very blessed!

Wow, Kim!  You are very blessed.  I just know you are going to rock out those last 15 pounds.  You can do it!  Thank you for sharing your story with us.  You are a true inspiration!
