My New Eating Plan is… [Video]

I chose Medifast.

It worked so well in the past that I had to do it again. It has been the most effective diet and was the easiest for me to follow with my schedule and family life. I have decided that this will be the eating plan that gets me to my healthy weight.

Medifast is a diet that was developed by doctors and recommended by doctors. The way I heard about Medifast was through my mom’s doctor. My mom was there for a check up and of course thinking about her obese daughter (me) and asked her what she recommended for weight loss. She told my mom she recommends Weight Watchers and Medifast. Well, I had tried WW many, many times so I figured I would give Medifast a try.

The Medifast plan is called the 5&1. You eat 5 medifast meals and 1 on your own called your lean and green or L&G. A lean and green is just what it sounds like – a lean meat and an approved green vegetable.

When you sign up for Medifast, you can either choose a food plan or you can customize your own. There are over 70 meals for you to choose from. A lot of them come in powder form that you mix with water.  Some come in food form like bars, puffs, pretzels, etc… The meals all have similar nutritional contents so they are interchangeable. They are also fortified with vitamins and minerals.

This plan has your body in a fat burning state called ketosis which helps you lose weight quickly without feeling hungry. I will be honest with you that the first week is rough. It feels kind of like going through withdrawl. I get headaches and I am very moody. After the first 3-4 days you really do start feeling better and you really aren’t hungry between meals.

I will be following this plan and letting you know from week to week how much weight I lose and what foods I like and dislike. I will let you know the good, the bad, and the ugly.

They also have an online community where they have forums, a chat, and you can blog about your own experience. This is a great area to get support from people going through similar things as you. You can find this community HERE.  There are also people on there who have gotten to goal, some losing hundreds of pounds that stay on the boards just to encourage others.

I started my eating plan on a Monday because all diets start on Monday, right?

I wanted to share the experience of opening my box from Medifast so I had Jen come and videotape me!  Here it is:

I started on Monday, April 15 but I didn’t want my weigh in day to be on a Monday so I have chosen Friday to be my weigh day. So… one and a half weeks have gone by and you want to know how much I have lost?!?

I have lost 8 pounds. Yep, in 11 days I managed to drop 8 pounds (Medifast weight loss varies for each individual, the typical person loses 2-5 pounds in the first week…I am an overachiever, I guess!). It hasn’t been smooth sailing but I feel as though I can really do it this time. I also have all of you that I have to answer to.

I am so excited to have started this journey again. I know that I am headed in a much better direction and that one day I will get to where I need to be. I know that my family will enjoy it when I can start doing more active things with them. I can’t wait for the day!! It will come, I just know it.

Congrats on getting rid of 8 lbs! woohoo! You’re doing a great job! Oh gosh, there are so many things I’d like to do if I wasn’t so heavy. I’d love to go to the beach with my family or even wear shorts and sleeveless shirts. Although I’m working on getting fit. I just completed my first month of crossfit and eating paleo. So, hopefully I’m well on my way to not letting my fat rule my life.

You can so do this. Congrats on starting. That is the hardest part!!

  • Mindy Frank Cope

Congrats on the 8lbs! Thats awesome. My question or concern would be once you lose the weight and switch back to regular food for every meal would you gain a bunch back? How hard will it be? Or do they give you a “switch over plan?

    • Katherine Holmes

That is a question with Medifast that a lot of people have. They do have a transition and maintenance program for when you are ready to go back to regular food. They slowly have you add certain foods back into your diet weaning you off of theirs so you don’t gain the weight back. Many people I have seen that transition in the MF community actually lose more weight during this phase. That’s a great question!!

Hey Katherine, Congratulations and best wishes on your new plan! You can do it! One request – since there are two of you writing, would you please put your name in large tip, bold, or something so we know who is posting? When I read the post, your name was in little tiny letters at the top. Thanks!

    • Katherine Holmes

We are going to try and fix that. Thank you for the suggestion!!

Did you inquire about the free Health Coaching that Medifast offers through Take Shape for Life. I am a health coach and it is proven through research that those participating in the TSFL program are 3 times more likely to maintain their weight loss! Let me know if you want more information and congrats on your decision to take control of your life!

    • Katherine Holmes

Yes, I do have a health coach and I agree they help guide you through the program. Thank you though.

I really like Medifast and do like most of the products….you certainly end up with favorites and some that just make you gag! (So disappointed with the brownies..had high hopes but the texture makes me gag!) I’m nursing a wee one right now so I can’t do Medifast (he reacts to soy). I’m working on losing weight safely and in a way that won’t make my little one react!

    • Katherine Holmes

Yes, and it is funny how everyone’s tastes are different. The brownie is one of my favorites that I have every night but I don’t make it like the directions. I add the water correctly but I only heat in the microwave for 30 sec. and then I freeze it for 25-30 min. I love it this way. It is nice and gooey. Every once in a while I will make a peanut butter cup with pb2 in the middle. That is so good too. Good luck to you and love on that precious baby because they grow up soooo fast!!

I can see the advantage w/this type of plan, learning about portion control and not having to plan, shop, prepare and count everything. This is something I need to think over and consider as an alternative for myself at least to get started on that road. Way to go with the 8 lb lost.!

    • Katherine Holmes

Thank you Carole. Hopefully the scale will start rapidly going downward.

  • Barbara Moon

Yay! Kath!! So proud of you and for putting your journey out here. Keep up the great work.

    • Katherine Holmes

Thank you, I can’t believe all of the support I have received. It is very humbling.

  • Jessica Wolfe

Now my husand is looking into it too….thanks for the coupon code! I can’t wait to follow your journey….you are such an inspiration! LOVE YOUR HONESTY!!!!

    • Katherine Holmes

I would love that!! Check out the medifast community and there is even a thread for men on there so your husband can do some male bonding with other male Medifaster’s. I always believe honesty is the best policy, right?
