Against the Wind – Weekly Weigh In

How close are you?

Well, my weigh in surprise from last week caught up to me.  Ten fold.

I didn’t go to Weight Watchers for several reasons but like always, I weighed in at home this morning.  Up 4 pounds.  Yep…4 freakin’ pounds.

So…I know that can’t possibly be “accurate” and it will even out next week.  No…I didn’t have a stellar week, however, I surely didn’t have such a “great” week that I gained 4 pounds.

I love how things happen that make me laugh and realize that this truly is a journey I am on.  I love how God places things smack dab in my path to get me to realize something.  Today was one of those days.

I had some time after school so I went to my mom’s house and we went on a walk together which we used to do quite a bit before I got a Monday afternoon tutoring student.  I have missed that time we spend together.

It has been VERY windy in Atlanta the past two days.  So much so that there has been a wind advisory.  Today, while we were walking, there were huge gusts of wind.  I mean HUGE!  You know, the kind of wind that when you are driving, you have to compensate a little bit in your car to stay in your lane?

Well…imagine that kind of wind while you are out walking.  Regardless, we were out for a nice long walk and the prettiest red bird flew in front of us.  At about that time, a huge gust of wind came and the bird was flapping his little wings like crazy but because of the wind he was just staying in the same spot.  He was  trying so hard but not going anywhere.  Eventually, the wind died down and he was able to get to his destination.

My mom and I started laughing hysterically.  We have never seen such a thing.  Poor little guy.

How many wind storms have we been caught in during our weight loss journey?  How many times have we been that little red bird flapping our arms as hard as we can to just feel defeated?   How many times have we stopped flapping because we feel the wind is too strong?

That little bird today did not stop.  He flapped as hard as he could even though he wasn’t going anywhere.  He did not give up.

No matter what storm you are going through, no matter how hard the wind is blowing, don’t give up.  Keep flapping those wings and giving it all you’ve got.  Eventually, the storm will calm and you will make it through to your destination.  Whatever you do, don’t give up!

What are your storms?  Have you reached a plateau?  Are you tired of flapping so hard and feel like you are standing still?  Keep on flappin’!

oh man I needed to read that today. I know I will never give up, but the depression that is sometimes caused in the process is…well…depressing!  Even though I know I will never quit…it’s hard to keep smiling, keep up the energy and stay happy!

You’re definitely not alone in your struggle.  When I look back at weight record, there have been so many times where I lost 3.2 one week and gained the next.  It’s totally my fault.  For some reason, I have a mental block when it comes to actually STAYING on plan.  I’ve done good for the last couple of weeks, so I’m hoping that I can finally move over this hurdle and lose my last 30 lbs.

I live in Florida and it’s been extremely windy here, too!

Keep it up! I know sometimes we get in the groove and slack a little. I think it helps to go back to the basics!

I live in Newnan, south of Atlanta.  That wind has been crazy!!  I couldnt keep my hat on and I was afraid that a limb was going to fall on my head while on my walk!   I am so scared of keeping my weight off.  Not that I’m anywhere near goal.  I have lost before but I can’t keep it off.  I need to remember that my journey is for the rest of my life.

Good thoughts…it certainly is for the rest of your life! I have to constantly remind myself of that! You can do it!

It is not hard for me to stay on plan.  Whats hard for me is when I do everything “right”, I stay on plan and do my exercise the same every week, and one week I lose 2.8 the next week I do the same exact thing and I gain 1.2. Arggh. So yeah, I’m that bird, flapping my little wings, and tweeting furiously! :)

Ok, I was super behind on posts, and then read about how you lost like 3.6 lbs the week before even though your eating and exercising wasn’t great, and I’ll be honest I was really jealous… I’m at a horrible point where I’m eating within my points every day and running 4 times a week, and I’m losing very little, and last week doing all that I gained 2.2!  Then I caught up and read this one.  It seems for me that my weigh ins are 2 weeks behind my behavior if that makes sense, so maybe this is really last weeks weigh in?  Just a thought… not that it matters… being up 4 lbs still sucks!

Also I love your quote!  It is where I am at right now.  After having a baby I started back to Weight Watchers in Dec, and I haven’t had 1 week where I’ve lost over 1 pound even though I’m doing what I should, and since I started running again 5 weeks ago, I’ve actually gained.  UGH!  That’s my storm.  I want to give up, I can’t keep doing this with no reward.  But the quote you posted is so true… what if I’m thisclose to my breakthrough?

Awesome post! When I started running, I gained weight at first also due to the calories I was eating in order to have energy! Just keep running and your body will adjust! Great job!

I needed this encouragement today! Thank you! I didn’t lose any this week, and I have even increased my exercise! UGH! But…I guess I will just keep on flapping! THANKS!

      Flap away! You’ve got this!

Jessica, I had a week like that too. I exercise 6 days a week, and on 3 of those days I exercised twice. So imagine my disgust when I lost like 0.8 lbs that week.  Apparently because I increased my exercise I should have increased my points (I NEVER eat my Activity Points). I did eat more the following week and exercised more and lost 4!  So keep at it!

I really like the bird story and the analogy I too need to keep flapping my wings! Just keep going and you will get there! I try not to skip my meetings because 1. the scale at the meeting is slightly lower than mine (yay) and 2. It’s always harder to go back the next week. Good luck in the coming week!

Great post!!  Love your attitude and the quote in the photo above by Thomas Edison.  I live in a suburb of Atlanta, so, “hi, neighbor”.

I have lost 45lbs since January, my wife has lost 35. We are both a little stuck right here. In the past, if we didn’t see results we would give up and go back to eating terribly. But I think with the new found relationship with exercising has really helped us. Before we just tried eating properly- not adding in much exercise. This time we tackled both. Which has helped- especially when I was stuck in the 190s (and now stuck bounching between 185-187) and she was stuck in the 180s and now in the 176-179 range. We are trucking though. It helps to have a partner in it all.
    Thanks for sharing story-
