Half Marathon Training Schedule

I want one of these for my car!

Am I really going to do this?

Am I really going to try and run a half-marathon in less than 8 weeks?

Why, “Yes!”  Yes, I am!

My friend Amy sent me a text last weekend asking if I wanted to do a half marathon with her.  My first response was, “Sure!”

Then reality set in.

Really?  A half marathon?  Oh-My-Lord!  Am I ready for this?  I just ran my first 10k since early college on Thanksgiving.  Could I possibly double that in a few short months?

I decided to ask my trusty source – Facebook.  I got an overwhelming response of “YES!”

So, I’m going to do it.  I’m scared.  I’m not sure if I will regret it later but, I’m going to do it.

We decided to do the ING half-marathon in Atlanta on March 18.

I have two goals in running this half-marathon.

First, I want to finish.  Lord, please just let me finish and NOT be last.

My second goal is to run more of it than I walk.  I know right now I could go out and walk a half-marathon.  I am a big walker.  Now, running a half-marathon, that’s a different story.  So, I want to run more than I walk.  Sounds reasonable to me.

I went looking on the internet for a reasonable training schedule because if I am really going to do this, I need a plan.  I found one on Runner’s World and downloaded it.  Then, I adapted it to make it fit my time frame and how I am used to working out.  Here is what I came up with:

Here's the Plan

I am a bit nervous about only running up to 10 miles before but then I think, “If I am running 10 dang miles beforehand, I am doing pretty good!”

If you are thinking of doing a half-marathon and would like to adapt my plan to fit you, here it is for you:

Have you done a half-marathon before?  If so, what training plan did you use?  Wish me luck.  Here goes nothing!

I know the 10 to 13.1 jump seems scary but it will come easily on race day.  I highly recommend that your “celebrate!!!” involves a post race massage to give yourself a non-food treat your body will thank you for!

Great idea! I am going to take the next day off and get a massage just because of your recommendation! Thanks so much!

You can do it. I have run a few 1/2 marathons in the past. Most recently I ran the 13.1 in October. I am not a fast runner by any means. I run an11:30 min mile i think. It is totally mental. I used the hal higdon training plan.

I will have to check out that training plan. I am between an 11 and 12 minute mile right now. Thanks for the encouragement!

Love the Galloway run/walk/run method!!  Got me through my first half marathon, on my way to my second.  At first walking at timed intervals felt like not really running, but am coming to realize 13.1 is a major accomplishment regardless of how it is acheived.   Best of luck – finishing is the BEST feeling!!

Awesome! Thanks for the tip on the Galloway method. I will have to check it out because I really do enjoy walking fast/jogging over running!
